Wagner's "Ring" cycle: Do you have more than one set of CD / DVD? Which do you prefer?
I am Orchestra CD Vienna Philharmonic, Solti / with Birgit Nilsson (Kirsten Flagstad-Fricka/Das Rheingold). And the DVD set of Levine / Met. / With Hildegard Behrens and Siegfried Jerusalem. If I remember correctly, once viewed a PBS presentation of a production from Bayreuth with Pierre Boulez conducting. And have you read from many tubes. Except for Siegfried Jerusalem "Siegfried" at the Met. 'S production (it looks like a real Siegfried), I prefer by far the Solti recording. What about you? Who / what the performance of this epic is your favorite? Alberich
I have at home 2 games (both Digitally Remastered, being registered long ago) the "Ring": the same 14 CD set – Solti with Vienna Philharmonic, and another DVD video set – probably the same as you've seen – the 1978 live recording of the Bayreuth Festival with Pierre Boulez conducting, Gwyneth Jones as Brünnhilde, Manfred Jung as Siegfried, etc. The production of the latter was my first chance to see the cycle "complete" in 4 consecutive evenings (almost as at Bayreuth) when several years ago the German Goethe Institute organized a performance filmed. Time passed, CD / DVD systems Home Theater came, I found this set and bought it. In comparing the two games, the sound quality of the first is a little better (not surprising for a recording studio). But there's another thing when you can not only hear but also see an opera – Bayreuth production of such Hagen (Fritz Hübner) wearing a shirt with a tie contemporary – his spear was looked a bit odd, there are other things too strange, imagining the world of Wagner. This is probably reason sometimes, watching television or an opera, I feel a desire to close my eyes and just listen.
